Fall A-Fair

at

Still Hollow Farm

Still Hollow Farm is celebrating its annual Fall A-Fair for two weekends in October.  All proceeds go to the Nathanael Greene Museum to help promote ongoing programs.   The fun and activities begin on Oct 9th and continue through Oct 17th.  Join us on the farm at 3005 West Allen’s Bridge Road in Greeneville, Tennessee.

The Farmer’s Wife Gift Shop will be filled with extra antiques and collectables with special discounts on all the garden and wrought iron items in stock.

As part of the open house event on the Quilt Trail, we will be serving refreshments on Sat. Oct 16th from 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM in the gift shop. Come listen as we share the story of our farm’s quilt square. We will also have some wonderful Greene County quilts on display and some for sale.

At the pavilion site, handmade crafts will include woodcraft, ceramics, folk art, fabric crafts, and baskets.  Come talk with local artisans and learn from various educational exhibits. We’re excited that Obermeyer’s furniture refinishers from Rogersville will have examples of refinished chairs. Bring your own chairs and furniture for these folks to take to their workshop for refurbishment.

Battle of Kings Mountain Lectures Studies Campaign

Known as the turning point of the American Revolution, the Battle of Kings Mountain was the result of threats hurled at the militia and families living in the Highlands of Southwest Virginia, East Tennessee and Western North Carolina.  Rather than seeing war come to our region the militias in the region mustered and eventually marched 200 miles to end the Loyalist threats commanded by Major Patrick Ferguson.  The brave mountain folk, largely from the current Mountain Empire, met the enemy at Kings Mountain South Carolina and changed the tide of American history.  In commemoration of the upcoming 230th anniversary of the Battle of King’s Mountain there will be a lecture series studying this decisive campaign by the Arts Array cultural outreach series of Virginia Highlands Community College.  This four-part series will be held on Thursday evenings during September at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon Virginia. These series of lectures are free to the public.

______________
Henry Johnson Realized His
Dream

This article appears courtesy of JohnsonDepot.com - a fascinating site for Johnson City history and events.

FRED W. HOSS

The Sunday Chronicle, Sunday, May 21, 1922

JOHNSON CITY, Tennessee -- Henry Johnson, founded Johnson City in 1856. In middle life, the staunch pioneer of commerce and industry came from the Mother State of Tennessee--old North Carolina--who just 60 years before had ceded to the Government of the United States her own Washington County, and called it "Tennessee." Mr. Johnson slowly crossed the trail to the rugged Allegheny ranges, following the same trail blazed just 100 years before by Daniel Boone.

Henry Johnson's last camping place was a little cleared spot in the woods by the newly-built branch of railroad that reached the tremendous distance from Chattanooga to Bristol, and with a name as long as the road--East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railroad Company. Around Henry's camping place is now built the City of Johnson City.

Mr. Johnson started a town by building a home along a country road (present West Market Street) which served as a stage coach route from Washington, D.C. to Knoxville, and on beyond. He opened a store which served travelers and local settlers and also conducted a hotel. Henry is reported to have welcomed travelers at any time and persons without means to pay for lodging were welcome just the same.

Lecture to focus on history of Jonesborough and its first Jewish residents

JOHNSON CITY – East Tennessee State University archivist Ned Irwin will speak on “Cone & Adler: Old World Ways and a New World Business” on Thursday, Sept. 2, at 5:30 p.m. in the university’s Reece Museum.

His free public lecture (rescheduled from its original date of Sept. 9) is planned in conjunction with the exhibit, “Bagels & Barbeque: The Jewish Experience in Tennessee,” which is on display at the museum through Sept. 24.  The traveling exhibit begins with the saga of early Jewish settlers emigrating from Europe, where most faced religious persecution, and follows the history of the people through the Civil War and Reconstruction, the early 20th century and World War II, the late 20th century and the civil rights movement, and on to the present.

Still Hollow Farm

Still Hollow Farm is proud to be designated as a "Tennessee Century Farm." It has been continuously owned and operated by the Allen/Birdwell family since 1857 when James Allen Sr. established the original farm of 560 acres about nine miles southwest of Greeneville. Eventually, he would own well over one thousand acres. Today, we farm around 180 acres of the original land.

What began as a way to bridge the gap from our historic roots in the eighteenth Century to our most recent endeavors in agritourism has now grown to allow us to meet your event needs from April thru October.  Still Hollow Farm is the ideal location for birthday parties, school field trips, weddings, family reunions, or picnics. Your guests will find the relaxing atmosphere to be a country treat as they gather in the pavilion overlooking the Nolichuckey River.

The Farmers Wife gift shop at Still Hollow Farm is a unique repurpose of the old granary. Located in the heart of the 1860's farmstead, it has a panoramic view of the Nolichuckey River and surrounding bottomlands. Unique again is what you will find inside. Handcrafts created by artisans who can turn a farm implement into a work of art or a piece of wood into a gift to treasure. We also specialize in wrought iron for your home and garden, The shop is open on most days, or by chance, from April through November. However, it is always best to call first and confirm the hours.
